An elderly woman in Kasese Municipality narrowly escaped tragedy after she became trapped in the raging floodwaters of River Nyamwamba following heavy rains, prompting a joint rescue operation by residents, police, Uganda Red Cross personnel, and local leaders.

An elderly woman identified as Gorret Mbambu, a resident of Road Barrier Cell in Kasese Municipality, has been rescued after she became trapped by raging floodwaters on River Nyamwamba following heavy rains that pounded the area on Thursday.

Mbambu had reportedly crossed the river earlier in the day to tend to her garden located on the opposite side of the river.

Trouble began when she attempted to return home as water levels suddenly rose due to continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Rwenzori Mountains, causing the river to swell rapidly.

According to eyewitnesses, the elderly woman managed to cross the first stream but became stranded in the middle of the second stream as the fast-moving waters intensified, leaving her helpless and unable to proceed.

A joint rescue operation involving residents, police officers, Uganda Red Cross personnel, and local leaders was immediately launched. After several tense moments, the teams successfully rescued her from the dangerous waters unharmed.

Kasese Municipal Community Development Officer Wilson Lughabwe praised the swift response by the community and rescue teams, noting that the victim was safely rescued without sustaining any injuries.

“We are very grateful to the community of Road Barrier, the police, Red Cross and all stakeholders who joined efforts to rescue the woman. She is safe and in good condition without any injuries,” Lughabwe said.

He added that the municipality would provide psychosocial support and counselling to help the elderly woman recover from the traumatic experience.

“We are arranging counselling and psychosocial support for her so that she regains confidence after the frightening ordeal,” he added.

Kasese Resident District Commissioner Lt. Joe Walusimbi commended the coordinated rescue efforts and urged members of the public to avoid unnecessary movement across flooded rivers during the rainy season.

“This rescue shows the importance of community cooperation during emergencies. We thank all those who participated in saving the woman’s life,” Lt. Walusimbi said.

Walusimbi also warned residents living near rivers and waterways to remain vigilant as the region continues to experience heavy rains that could trigger more flooding incidents.

“Water levels on River Nyamwamba are rising again, and experts are warning that more rains are expected. People living near waterways should consider relocating temporarily until the situation normalizes,” he cautioned.

He further appealed to residents to prioritize safety and heed warnings issued by authorities whenever heavy rains occur.

River Nyamwamba has over the years remained one of the most dangerous rivers in Kasese District during rainy seasons, frequently bursting its banks and causing destruction to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods in surrounding communities. The river has previously caused deadly floods and widespread displacement, especially in low-lying areas around Kasese Municipality and surrounding sub-counties.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the rainy season persists across the Rwenzori sub-region.
